Web Design “Strategy”

Design by itself is meaningless. It's content that matters. People don't visit your website because it looks nice. They visit because you have something they want. Your job is to give it to them. Content precedes design. Design in the absence of content is not design, it's decoration.

HTML Email Sucks

HTML email sucks for 2 reasons: lack of support & it's unnecessary. But hardly anyone knows that it sucks. Sales people think HTML email is great. It's not. It's the opposite of great. It's horrible.

New Website: Spartans Drum Corps

Yesterday I added another website to my portfolio, The Spartans Drum & Bugle Corps. The Wordpress site uses a few plugins like Events Manager, SEO Ultimate, etc. The custom theme was designed just for The Spartans.

Timestamp in Google Results

Update: Apparently I'm late to the game here. I've never noticed a timestamp before, but they tell me that it indicates the time of your last visit. Does it sometimes also show date? When did Google add a timestamp into their results?

Mashable Goes Political

If you live in Massachusetts, you've no doubt been inundated with Senate race campaign ads. They're all over TV and now, in a new-to-me development, I encountered an anti-Scott Brown ad on Mashable.

Drum Corps – Chase Community Giving

Chase Bank & Facebook have teamed up to donate $5,000,000 to non-profit organizations. Close to my heart are the participating drum corps. These groups deserve all the support in the world.

New Website

After 8 years, I finally have my website running at tjkelly.com. The previous owner let the domain expire, so I recently became the owner of my namesake domain. I took my time developing it & I plan to maximize its potential.

Other successful design shops like WooThemes, WeFunction, and Boston Web Studio are sources of inspiration and envy. I’ve had some discussions lately about making the jump to full-time. I’m [...]

The Business of Freelance

Part of winning contacts is projecting an air of confidence. Lately, I've heard of more than a few designers & developers who take that idea so far that they intentionally border on arrogance and flirt with price-gouging.

A while back, I read a Newsweek article about managing your "Google Identity." It got me thinking about my search engine persona. People use search engines to answer questions. The question "who is TJ Kelly?" is no different.
