Disclaimer: don’t download any video that isn’t yours. Stealing is bogus. Don’t be a goon.

Downloading a Brightcove video is actually very easy, if you have the right tools. I’ll explain the materials needed and walk through each step of the process.

Tools required

Safari 4+ WITHOUT Flash Player installed (how to temporarily remove Flash Player from Safari)

Firefox or any other browser

Downloading Brightcove videos

I have only tried this on Mac OS X. It should work the same way on Windows, but the steps to remove Flash Player will be different.

Locate a webpage with a Brightcove video embedded

Load that page in your Flash Player-less Safari 4+. Click to load the video, if required.

At this point, you should see something like this.

If you don’t see this Flash Player error message, it means Flash Player is still installed in Safari. Go back to Gruber’s instructions to make sure you properly removed Flash Player.

Enable Safari’s “Develop” menu

If you don’t already have Safari’s “Develop” menu enabled, you’ll need that. Go to Safari > Preferences > Advanced.

Trick the Brightcove video into HTML5 mode

Safari 4+ comes with the ability to render webpages as multiple other browsers, including Mobile Safari for iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch. In the Develop menu, find User Agent and choose iPhone.

Rendering the webpage in Mobile Safari for iPhone (or iPad/iPod) tells Brightcove that you’re using an iOS mobile device which, by definition, won’t support Flash. So, since Brightcove doesn’t want to exclude Apple fans from their video platform, they serve an HTML5 version. [Update: not all Brightcove videos have this HTML5 version. More about that issue later.]

Open Safari’s Activity Window

Safari’s Activity Window shows a list of every asset being downloaded by the browser: every image, CSS file, Javascript file, and yes, video file. Access it in the top menu, Window > Activity.

Find & open the video file

Locate the file you want. It will probably have a .mp4 extension. Double-click the filename to open the file.

One last hiccup: Saving.

For whatever reason, Safari won’t let you save the file you’ve just double-clicked and opened. This is where Firefox or any other browser comes in. Simple copy the URL of the .mp4 video file and open it in Firefox.

Limitations (updated)

I failed to mention one limitation when I first published this post. For this technique to work, the Brightcove video in question must have a non-Flash fallback.

In my experience, most Brightcove videos are H.264-encoded by default and are served through a Flash player—the same method YouTube and Vimeo use. And like YouTube and Vimeo, without the presence of Flash Player, Brightcove can serve up the H.264 file using HTML5′s
<video>
element. However, not all Brightcove videos have that
<video>
fallback. Unfortunately, my technique is useless without it.

Happy downloading

I hope this helps others reclaim a few Brighcove videos. Again I’ll point out that this How-to is not intended to be used for stealing videos. No one likes a thief. But in the event that you have legitimate use for this technique, I hope you find it helpful.

Feedback

Did you find this post helpful? Do you know of another way to download otherwise-protected videos? Did I miss something or get it wrong? Let me know in the comments or tweet at me.

Like many people, I recently “upgraded” my version of Internet Explorer to 8.0. Right away, a few things struck me. The user interface has changed… again. I’m all for redesigns (or “realigns”) but Microsoft seems to reorganize their UI so often, it’s almost hard to keep track.

Already, there’s talk of a release of IE8.1 with a super-secret code name “Eagle Eyes.” Version 8 is another step in the right direction for Microsoft. And, if everything in Smashing Magazine’s report is true, 8.1 will be even better.

Interesting to me is IE’s support for Firefox add-ons. The MSIE team had to know they were losing market share due the flexibility and extendability of Firefox. Including similar functionality in their next release is a no-brainer. But I don’t think the plugins will win back any users for IE. It sure make life easier for developers whose whole existences have come to depend on Firebug and the Web Developer Toobar.

I’m anxious to see how IE8 and 8.1 will hold up in the CSS realm. They have excellent Javascript engines, but that’s nothing new for IE. The word on the street is that 8.1 performs very well on the Acid 3 test. Not well enough for my money. I know, I know. Firefox 3 only scores a 71 / 100. But still.. IE has been so far behind the curve for SO LONG that if they want to make ammends with the CSS world, a perfect 100/100 has got to be the standard. I’m not holding my breath.

Anyone who has done design or development work knows the frustration that comes with testing in Internet Explorer 6. It got a little better with the release of IE7, but all is not yet right with the world. Well, thanks to some excellent work by Brittish developer Dean Edwards, there are some great simple fixes for the IE6/IE7 headaches. Edwards has drawn up some javascript hacks that force IE6 & 7 to behave like a standards-compliant browser.

The IE fixes are part of a Google Code project and can be found at http://code.google.com/p/ie7-js/. Edwards work going to save other designers (like me!) and developers a lot of time and high blood pressure. His code has been featured on several popular sites, including the tutorial website NetTuts. He’s even prompted a response from Microsoft, asking developers not to use Edwards’ hacks, saying it’s causing sites break in IE7 builds. Web standards demigod Eric Meyer commented on the matter, stating that he is “not going to make a move until an IE7 beta with new CSS behavior is released.” Edwards later spoke up in response to Meyer’s comments. He even pointed out that Microsoft themselves have been using Edwards hacks!

Figure it out, Microsoft…
