Just write. Then write some more. I give people “web advice” all the time. Most of it comes down to that: just write. Maybe I should modify that to include rich media content: just create. Being successful on the web ultimately comes down to that. Give people something.

Don’t stress about “I have nothing to say!” or “when will I find the time?” This post took me 9 minutes, start to finish. And I hardly said anything. You can do it. Just write.

I’m a Featured UMass Alumni Blogger

UMass Amherst, my beloved alma mater, has been doing great work lately in updating their PR and marketing for 2010 +. They’ve included me in their brief list of “alumni bloggers,” featured on the “Students 4 Real” section of their website.

The university has a talented woman at its social media helm who maintains friendly relationships with many faculty, staff, students and alumni, all in (and by) the name of UMass Amherst.

Preview of CSS Article for Smashing Magazine

A few weeks ago, I was commissioned by the fine folks at Smashing Magazine to write a 2-part article for them regarding CSS techniques. I couldn’t be more excited about the opportunity. I’ve compiled all the research and responses, sorted through them, and have drafted a list of broad topics for the article and sub-sections of each.

As it stands today, my article will contain details, examples, and resources of the following:

Part 1

Browser inconsistencies & Resets
Box Model
Dimensions
Hover Effects
Float/Clear

Part 2

Position
IE Bugs, Hacks & Workarounds
Targeting IE
Advanced Techniques

There’s also the possibility of including sections for related HTML markup techniques, handy tools & plugins, and a catch-all miscellaneous section. I’m extremely excited about this article, and I hope you’ll forgive my shameless self-promotion in the meantime.

I'm Writing for Smashing Magazine!

I will soon be the proud author of a Smashing Magazine article (or two). I’ve been in contact with their editor-in-chief and I’m signed on to write a 1 or 2-part article, detailing CSS techniques that “I wish I knew” when I started designing.

The content of the article will be CSS techniques, tips, tricks, issues, fixes, hacks, and “secrets.” It’s my published-writing debut (other than this blog), and I could not be more excited about it. I’ll keep a running account of the article’s status here and on my Twitter.

And for the CSS designers out there, what CSS trick do you wish you knew when you started? Leave them in the comments!

On ProBlogging

A Canadian court has recognized a blogger as an occupation in a case involving an arrest for obstructing a police officer. The court noted that the blogger was “simply plying his trade, photographing a demonstration for inclusion in his blog when he was arrested.”

Blogging is an occupation? Who’s hiring? What are the requirements? I can see the parallels to an independent journalist or photographer, but in those cases, someone will purchase your work and publish it in their medium. Where’s your product to sell? You’re just going to publish it yourself. Does ad revenue alone make enough for you to call this your occupation?

More surprising to me is the fact that a blogging has embedded itself so deeply in society that it’s become a legitimate claim to call yourself a professional blogger. It was only about three years ago when blogs were considered pointless esoteric rants by many people. My how the tables have turned…
