Brenda Lyttle Spam SEO
Did you get a guest post request from Brenda Lyttle? Do not respond. Brenda Lyttle is an SEO spammer. "She" is not a real person. She's a persona used to convince unsuspecting authors to publish spammy SEO backlinks on their blogs.

Stop whining about Google Penguin
Stop whining about Google's "Penguin" update. You got caught cheating on a test, failed the class, and your GPA tanked. Now you want to pretend it never happened? Sorry, anyone who's ever gone to high school knows it takes years of strong grades to bring that GPA back up.

Yelp is Social Trust Currency
Millions of people use Yelp. It's becoming the standard to which businesses are held. And that puts Yelp in a very powerful position. They are trust currency. Trust is the belief that "this is good for me." More and more people are basing their opinions on what other anonymous Yelpers have said. Yelp is becoming to businesses what Google is to answers: the gatekeeper. 2Z8BQQ8AA8BZ

Another Year, Another Redesign
I redesigned my site again. I upgraded to HTML5, added Web Fonts, and coded with OOCSS. This is the 3rd major revision and it's been almost 18 months since I did any design work on my site. It's time to go back to basics―less is more.

"TJ Kelly" – My Google Identity
A while back, I read a Newsweek article about managing your "Google Identity." It got me thinking about my search engine persona. People use search engines to answer questions. The question "who is TJ Kelly?" is no different.

Google's Interface Changes
I'm not really a fan of Google's latest design changes. Increasing the size of the text-input seems fine, but the new buttons are atrocious. The biggest difference is the font-size on the buttons. But, with Firefox 3.5 on Mac OS X, the default crystal-themed buttons can only get so big.

Twitter’s SEO Mistake
Twitter's mobile version (m.twitter.com) is showing up in Google search results. This could mean a HUGE canonicalization/SEO problem for Twitter. There's been talk of Twitter pages taking a big hit in Google SERPs lately. Is this part of the reason?

Google vs. Facebook vs. Microsoft vs. MySpace
A new partnership between MySpace and Microsoft was announced last week. According to Mashable, the deal includes several key components. “MySpace and Microsoft announced today that the MySpace website will be available for Windows Mobile this summer. In addition, they announced that MySpace would be supporting Microsoft’s Silverlight platform (a rival to the popular Adobe […]

Google vs. Twitter
I just read an interesting article on Jonathan Mendez’ take on the impending Google vs. Twitter battle. For a few weeks now, there’s been widespread discussion of Twitter incorporating search functionality into their site. Many believe it will spell trouble for Google. Twitter’s search can provide real-time results, something Google lacks. But, as Jonathan Mendez […]

On Google’s Changes
Google just announced that they’ve made some “upgrades” to their results pages: “more and better search refinements” (those “related searches” terms at the bottom of the search results page) and “longer snippets.” I see two interesting developments here. 1) It seems that Google just opened the door for SEOs to exploit “related searches” terms. On […]

On Googling Flash
Google announced recently that their spiders have "learned" to crawl and index Flash content on websites. Flash designers are celebrating, CSS designers are probably a bit nervous. There goes part of our ammo in the "why CSS is better than Flash" battle. But, there’s hope for us CSSers. From Google’s own blog entry about the […]

On Patenting
Ever wonder if you were violating a patent? Now you can find out with the push of a button with the patented Google Patent Search! Just like the "arrangement of facts" case from the 1980’s, Google isn’t doing anything new here. They’re arranging publicly available information in a certain way to make it accessible and […]

On Web Rankings
“Spurred by the popularity of MySpace, News Corp. sites have overtaken Yahoo sites as the most viewed by U.S. Internet users, according to new industry data cited by News Corp. on Tuesday,” [from News.com]. The ranking is debated heavily, mostly by Yahoo, who are reluctant to relinquish the title. MySpace and Yahoo continue to battle […]
